Words from the founder

Hi, I’m Mary Walker.

Hi, I’m Mary Walker.

I’m a licensed math educator, college professor, and compassionate mentor with over 20 years of experience helping students unlock their full potential in math and beyond. My journey as an educator is rooted in my belief that every learner deserves patience, understanding, and a tailored approach to overcome their unique challenges. This belief underscores the mission and vision I have for Mindful Math.

Who I Am

From Division 1 soccer player to math professor, I’ve always valued collaboration, perseverance, and the power of growth. As a mother who has personally navigated the complexities of foster care, adoption and learning disablities, I understand the importance of creating safe, encouraging spaces for learning. This insight fuels my passion for supporting students with social, emotional, and academic challenges, including those who are anxious, neurodivergent, or navigating life’s hurdles.

What I do

I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when a student who once said, “I can’t do math,” starts to believe, “I can.” Whether it’s a high schooler conquering algebra, an adult returning to school after years away, or a child with dyscalculia discovering the joy of learning through my custom-designed math card game, I am here to make math approachable, understandable, and even enjoyable.

Why It Matters

I specialize in breaking down math concepts into manageable pieces, empowering students to tackle problems step by step with confidence. My approach is not just about numbers; it’s about fostering resilience, curiosity, and a belief in one’s ability to succeed. Whether working with kids, teens, or adults, I bring patience, humor, and a science-based teaching style that transforms even the most math-averse learners into confident problem-solvers.

“I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand the profound impact Mary Walker has on her students. Mindful Math is more than tutoring; it’s a life-changing resource for students who need a fresh approach to learning.”

Best math teacher I have had at all the colleges I have attended: Henry Ford Community College, Eastern Michigan University, Washtenaw Community College.

,

Friendly, but professional. She knows how to interact with students but remain on track and not bird walk. She’s patient and makes sure you understands the material, even if she needs to re-explain it in multiple ways.

,

Mary does a great job of relating the objectives to our everyday lives. She is by far my favorite math teacher that I have ever had. I never thought math could be fun, before I worked with her.

,

I was really struggling with math but Mary was able to meet me where I was at and encourage me to build my math skills. She took the time to make sure I truly understood the topics so that I could successfully move my learning forward.
